Bridge the gap! Help christen city's crossing
Residents are being urged to help christen a city’s multi-million-pound footbridge.
Regeneration bosses have unveiled a shortlist of three names for Sunderland’s new River Wear crossing.
The trio – chosen from more than 1000 public submissions – are Keel Crossing, Wear Crossing and Beacon Bridge.
Spanning 260 metres and sitting 30 metres above the river, the VolkerStevin-built bridge forms part of the city’s wider Riverside Sunderland development, which includes new commercial, residential and leisure space.
Councillor Michael Mordey, leader of Sunderland City Council, said: “We were overwhelmed with how many residents got on board with naming suggestions.
“We now have a great shortlist and it’s only right the public get the final vote.
“We’ve had stories of entire families, school classes and community groups coming together to think of names, so hopefully this next stage will spark even more excitement.”
To vote, visit www.sunderland.gov.uk/your-sunderland by 5pm on Friday, June 6.
