Getting to know... Martin Singer
In a feature looking at the person behind the business profile, Martin Singer, chief executive at South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation, talks about the importance of social values, the joy he finds in helping others and how he unwinds outside of work.
We know you as chief executive of South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation, but who is the person behind the title? Tell us a little about what makes you tick...
We all have a responsibility to be a positive contributor to society and our communities.
I get energy from seeing the difference we can all make by working together and by showing up with that in mind.
I love visiting new places and experiencing different cultures. There is so much to see and learn.
Did you always want to work in the voluntary sector?
No, but I’m delighted to be here!
I joined a graduate retail programme, going on to work in the sector for more than 25 years.
Most of that was with John Lewis. It was there that many of my core values were forged: being fair, being authentic and supporting others.
The big change came when I worked in the voluntary sector while on a nine-month paid sabbatical.
I was inspired by the people I worked with, their impact and the importance of the sector.
I’ve never looked back.
What is the best bit about your job? And the worst?
At South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation, we are experts in social value and philanthropy.
We are grant making specialists.
When we give grants, and then see the impact that money has in our communities, it’s so rewarding.
The difference made can be enormous.
There is no ‘worst’ bit, but the funding challenges for the voluntary sector are significant.
That is also where the opportunity lies.
Organisations and individuals who want to support their communities and make life better for everyone can join us and help fund even more difference makers.
What do you consider to be your greatest achievement?
Supporting my two young adults to grow into the brilliant people they are today.
How do you relax outside of work?
I have a real passion for travel, gradually ticking off places to see and cultures to experience.
Aside from holidays, I love walking and sport.
I am a committed supporter of my local football and ice hockey teams.
What makes South Yorkshire such a great place to live and work?
I’ve lived in Yorkshire for more than 30 years.
The quality of life is fantastic.
I love the straightforward people, the open spaces, the countryside and the thriving independent food and retail scene.
Tell us something about you we didn’t know…
I have camped in Antarctica.
