Getting to know... Michael Slavin

In a feature looking at the person behind the business profile, Michael Slavin, newly-appointed chief executive at Newcastle-based Northern Stage, talks about his love for the cultural sector, the people that make his role so special and catching the theatrical bug at a young age.

We know you as the new chief executive of Northern Stage but who is the person behind the title? Tell us a little about what makes you tick?

I am a huge fan - and supporter - of culture.

Whether that is theatre, literature, music or more, I love to spend time engaging with the arts.

My wife Rebecca and I have two amazing kids, so spending time with them is the highlight of any week.

We recently visited Twycross Zoo, and our girls were blown away by the size of a giraffe in real life, which was brilliant to see!

Did you always want to work in the culture sector?

When I started my career in retail, the culture sector was always a dream of mine, it just took a few years for me to get there!

Joining York Theatre Royal was a significant milestone, and since then I’ve been fortunate enough to join 11Arches, and am now heading to Northern Stage.

I can’t think of three better places to work, so consider myself very fortunate that early dream has been satisfied.

What’s the best bit about your job? And the worst?

The best bit about my job – and I’m sure this will remain true at Northern Stage – is the people.

The whole culture sector is filled with the most magnificent people; creative and driven people, with a real sense of social responsibility.

Working with people who have a desire to work together to create work, which both entertains and changes minds, is a real privilege.

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement?

Professionally, every show I've helped create is at the top of that list.

The effort, energy and enthusiasm it takes to create a beautiful and transformative theatre show is monumental.

It is also a joy to be part of.

How do you relax outside of work?

Spending time with the kids, either crafting, playing or going on day trips.

Other than that, I take great pleasure in reading, going to the theatre and being a big sports fan (though more watching than playing!).

What makes the North East such a great place to live and work?

The North East has everything a person could want.

There are beautiful beaches and rolling hills; a vibrant culture sector, with something for everyone; great restaurants; and brilliant sports teams.

Above all else, though, are the friendliest, kindest and most engaging people.

Tell us something about you we didn’t know…

As a teenager, I performed in the theatrical retelling of the history of my village, called the Bishopthorpe Pageant.

I had four roles, including a Tudor nobleman and a member of the Home Guard.
