A new era for North East stays

Three hotel openings are bringing bold new energy to the region

From city stays to countryside escapes, the North East’s hospitality scene is enjoying a serious glow-up - and this summer, two new hotel openings and one full-scale refurbishment are helping lead the charge.

South of the region, The Wainstones Hotel, in Great Broughton, is a strikingly reimagined country hotel on the edge of the North York Moors.

Following a full-scale refurbishment completed in just six months, the 20-bedroom hotel now blends playful interiors with warm Yorkshire hospitality.

Think bold, personality-packed bedrooms (many dog-friendly), a cocktail bar mixing up showstoppers and standout dining that features seasonal modern dishes with a Yorkshire twist.

The adjoining Stones Café has already become a local brunch and lunch favourite, serving everything from a full English to acai bowls, bagels to French toast. Find out more about The Wainstones Hotel here.

Next up, city glamour lands in Newcastle with the arrival of Hotel Gotham, the brand’s second-ever location and its first outside Manchester.

Located in the Grade II-listed 3 St James’ Street building, this decadent newcomer brings Gatsby-esque flair to the Quayside, with 60 Art Deco-inspired bedrooms, a private members’ lounge and its signature speakeasy-style hospitality.

Its arrival is a bold statement for Newcastle’s luxury scene; it's an open invitation to the city to stay, play and linger longer.

Chris Thompson, general manager at Hotel Gotham, says: “There’s nothing like this in the North East.

“Gotham is where heritage meets hedonism.

“Newcastle is a city full of energy and personality, and we feel this new space really reflects that.

“We’ve worked hard to honour the history of the buildings while creating something fresh and memorable.”

It's set to open in September, and you can find out more about Hotel Gotham here.

Finally, The Bailiffgate Hotel, in Alnwick, opened at the end of May with an offering as rich in heritage as it is in flavour.

Overlooking Alnwick Castle, the boutique hotel is home to Motte & Bailey, a fine dining restaurant led by chef Paul Blakey, where menus are built on regional produce and creative flair.

From Craster kipper hash to afternoon tea in the courtyard, it’s a celebration of Northumbrian hospitality past, present and future.

Private dining in the beautifully restored Mrs Bowmaker’s Room adds another layer of charm.

Together, these openings represent more than just new places to stay.

They signal confidence in the North East’s tourism sector, a commitment to local talent and a belief that world-class hospitality belongs here - in villages, cities and castle towns alike.
