Blue Star rises in Newcastle pub revival

A publican is breathing new life into a historic city pub.

Darren Goodwin, known for running the Tanners Arms, in Ouseburn, has taken over the Black Bull near St James’ Park and rebranded it as The Blue Star.

Darren said: “We wanted to bring a slice of the Ouseburn scene to the West End.

“That means quality food, a bit of edge in the decor and a vibe that’s cool, creative and family-friendly.”

Named in tribute to Newcastle’s brewing history and iconic football crest, The Blue Star’s interior has been redesigned to create a more welcoming, inclusive space free from football memorabilia.

Darren added: “We’re not trying to be a football pub; there are a few of those around the ground already.

“We’re offering something different – bringing art, culture, food and community to the good people of the West End.”

Darren’s expansion builds on the success of Scranners Arms, his delivery brand launched during the pandemic with head chef Stuart Hann, which has laid the foundations for this move.

Darren added: “Our reputation has grown since COVID-19, and people have stayed with us.

“We’ve rubber-stamped the menu from the Tanners because we know it works.

“It’s the same Sunday dinners, same street food and same team.

“The response has been brilliant, and we will continue to grow the Scranners brand within The Blue Star.”
