Council commits to cleaner and safer streets
A North East local authority is stepping up efforts to improve public spaces and street maintenance.
Gateshead Council has unveiled plans to invest in 35 new street scene operatives and additional equipment in response to resident feedback.
The move builds on wider commitments to enhance local services, including £6.8 million for new waste vehicles and £7.7 million over five years for pothole repair machinery.
Alongside the investment, the council will boost community engagement by showcasing progress through regular updates.
Officials say the goal is to create safer, cleaner environments while encouraging residents to take pride in their local area.
Councillor John McElroy, cabinet member for environment and transport at Gateshead Council, said: “We know how important these services are for local people and, despite ongoing financial challenges, we are determined to do the best we can to invest and improve our streets and public spaces for everyone to enjoy.
“We can’t do this alone and we need everyone in the borough to love where they live.
“However, we will do everything we can and we’re fully committed to improving the resources we have in this area both in terms of machinery and staffing.”
