Newcastle Airport flies into record summer
An airport is set for a record-breaking summer as passenger numbers hit new highs.
Newcastle International Airport expects more than 1.3 million people to pass through its terminal between July 19 and August 19, making it the busiest summer in its history.
Over 2800 flights are scheduled during this peak period to popular holiday destinations including Ibiza, Barcelona, Antalya and Dalaman.
The surge in travellers follows a boom in international passenger numbers and the arrival of new airline partners Norwegian and Blue Islands, now flying to Copenhagen, Jersey and Guernsey.
Eurowings has also added Berlin to its schedule, while TUI has expanded to include Morocco and Egypt.
Jet2.com will boost services further in October, adding flights to Budapest and Marrakesh.
The airport, which connects to global hubs including London Heathrow, Dubai, Amsterdam, Paris, Dublin and Frankfurt, also offers one-stop links to long-haul destinations such as New York, Hong Kong, Sydney and Mauritius.
To support the growth, £3 million has been invested in upgrading the departure lounge.
Refreshed facilities include a revamped Bar 11 with airfield views and refurbished JD Sports, WHSmith and Boots stores.
Airport bosses also highlight that 99 per cent of passengers have cleared security in under ten minutes so far this year.
Nick Jones, chief executive at Newcastle Airport, said: “This summer is already off to a fantastic start at Newcastle Airport and we are excited to welcome even more families with many schools breaking up this week.
“The rise in passenger numbers reflects our growing route network, new airline partnerships and continued investment to enhance the airport's facilities and services.
“As always, we encourage everyone to arrive in good time, check with their airline for the latest flight information and follow our security guidelines to ensure a smooth and enjoyable start to their journey.”
