Tees nature network lands lottery boost
An environmental partnership is set to transform urban green spaces thanks to a “remarkable” national funding award.
The Tees Urban Nature Network (TUNN) has secured £649,000 through the Nature Towns and Cities Programme, backed by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, National Trust and Natural England.
Led by Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, Middlesbrough Council, Stockton Borough Council and Tees Valley Wildlife Trust, TUNN will unite communities, schools, businesses and environmental groups to help people reconnect with nature across the Tees Valley.
Officials say the funding will be used to recruit a dedicated team and “kick-start” a series of community-led projects to enhance and celebrate parks, rivers, cemeteries, allotments and other urban green and blue spaces.
They add that the initiative also aims to improve wellbeing, encourage environmental responsibility and increase long-term access to nature, especially in areas where people feel most disconnected from it.
Councillor Carrie Richardson, cabinet member for climate and culture and deputy leader of Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, said: “This investment from Nature Towns and Cities presents a remarkable opportunity to forge a greener, healthier future for our communities – one where people and nature thrive together.
“Tees Urban Nature Network is about empowering our communities to shape the places they live in, and lead change for healthier, and more resilient communities.
“The funding will help tackle health inequalities and social isolation by supporting participation and making our natural spaces more accessible, inclusive and fit to serve and reflect community priorities.”
Work begins this year across the Tees area.
