First project complete in £100 million airport work
Work has been completed on the first phase of a £100 million airport terminal expansion.
Contractors have added a new arrivals hub at Leeds Bradford Airport.
The 102,000sq ft space includes a baggage reclaim area, passport control zone, food and drink sites and two premium passenger lounges.
The work was overseen by property and construction consultancy EDGE, which is now set to refurbish the airport’s original 1968 terminal and improve infrastructure between terminal areas.
Bosses say the upgrades – due to be finished in late 2026 – will “significantly increase” terminal floorspace and boost the travel hub’s annual passenger capacity by 75 per cent to 6.8 million people.
Vincent Hodder, Leeds Bradford Airport chief executive, said: “We are delighted to see our new terminal extension operational.
“It has been an incredible journey to get here, and we know our customers are going to get a completely new experience.”
EDGE led on project, programme and cost management, deploying commercial, programme and project management staff from its Leeds and Nottingham offices, which it says ensured the airport remained fully operational throughout.
Gordon Parkinson, EDGE senior project manager, said: “This has been one of the most complex but rewarding projects we have undertaken.
“It required round-the-clock collaboration with stakeholders ranging from baggage handlers and food operators to UK Border Force and the airport’s operational teams.”
