Work underway to transform ex-brewery site
Work has begun to redevelop a “sleeping giant” beer-making site into a residential and commercial complex.
Developer Capital&Centric has started enabling works at Sheffield’s former Cannon Brewery base.
Bosses say the project will deliver 550 homes, 20,000sq ft of commercial space and a public square, adding it will “transform a long-abandoned landmark into a vibrant new neighbourhood”.
They add structures including the 3.5-acre site’s water tower and brew house will be restored, with construction earmarked to begin in early 2026.
Dating back to the 1800s, Cannon Brewery was once one of Sheffield’s largest employers, with its beers shipped across the country.
John Moffat, joint managing director at Manchester-based Capital&Centric, said: “Cannon Brewery is a sleeping giant that had been left to rot for years – but it’s got incredible bones and bags of potential.
“We’re preserving the characterful bits and building a proper community around them.
“Getting enabling works underway is a massive milestone and sets us up to get cracking with construction early next year.”
The project is being supported by £11.67 million from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority's Brownfield Housing Fund.
Oliver Coppard, South Yorkshire mayor, added: “Our homes are our foundation; bricks and mortar give us security and bring families and communities together.
“The Cannon Brewery site is a fantastic example of how we can bring brownfield land back to life, creating vibrant places where people want to live, work and spend time.”
