Strong civils pipeline driving Esh’s growth across Yorkshire
Contractor’s civil engineering division secures multiple high-value schemes, increases recruitment and expands its regional presence.
Esh Construction is geared up for significant growth across its Yorkshire and the Humber civil engineering division with more than £40 million of live and secured projects among its portfolio.
Operating across Yorkshire and the Humber for more than a decade, Esh has steadily expanded its civil engineering presence throughout the region, building a trusted track record in bridge refurbishment, active travel, public realm, and highways and infrastructure schemes. Beyond the £40 million of secured projects, Esh has forward visibility of a further £60 million of projects through framework and open tender avenues.
In Calderdale, Esh has been appointed to complete Stage 1 detailed designs for the Elland Access Package – the development will create new routes from Elland town centre and two new pedestrian and cycle bridges crossing the River Calder, and Calder and Hebble Navigation. Stage 2 construction is expected to commence early 2026.
The Elland Access Package project will support access to the planned new Elland Rail Station by creating easier and safer walking and cycling connections from Elland town centre and wider areas
Also in West Yorkshire, Esh has recently secured works on two further schemes, including a £6.4 million project with Kirklees Council, known as the A638 Dewsbury to Cleckheaton Sustainable Transport Corridor. Meanwhile in South Yorkshire, Esh is progressing the stage 1 design phase with Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council for the Broom Road Phase 2 active travel project.
With a series of YORcivil3 framework projects due to begin this autumn across Yorkshire, divisional director Steven Garrigan is buoyed by the firm’s future prospects in the region, with Esh having previously delivered several successful projects on YORhub’s YORcivil1 and YORcivil2 Frameworks.
He said: “Over the past two to three years, we’ve grown our client base, developed our regional team, and successfully delivered a series of complex infrastructure projects in the Yorkshire region, which represent a 100 per cent uplift in turnover from the same time in 2023 as we continue to target steady and organic growth.
“Building on the momentum of securing £40 million in projects, across the Yorkshire and Humber region – we’re on track to significantly surpass our divisional targets for 2025 and 2026. The scale and strategic value of these contracts reflect our ability to deliver on programme and budget and the strength of our client relationships across the region.”
Esh is now working with multiple clients, including Kirklees, Hull and Calderdale councils – secured in part due to the collaborative and pre-construction expertise the team brings through Early Contractor Involvement (ECI).
Esh was appointed by Hull City Council to undertake ECI investigations for the repair and strengthening of Drypool Bridge in Hull – the Stage 2 refurbishment and repair works on the bridge commenced in July.

Esh has enjoyed key civil engineering project wins steadily through the last ten years. Recent project completions include the M181 Southern Junction works for North Lincolnshire Council, where a new roundabout has been installed on the outskirts of Scunthorpe to facilitate future development in the area, and a £4.4 million improvement scheme to support further riverside housing development in Rotherham alongside the river Don. The Rotherham scheme forms part of a key regeneration project by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council which aims to bring more houses to the town centre.

Further civil engineering contract awards across Brighouse, Rotherham and the Rivelin Valley, mean that Esh is not only delivering improvements to Yorkshire’s infrastructure but also creating opportunities for its people. With a growing pipeline, Esh is continuing its careful approach to recruitment, expanding its team across all disciplines. The Yorkshire and Humber region has increased staffing levels by over 20 per cent in the last year, and the business is actively seeking engineers, project managers, planners and operatives to become part of the journey.
Steven added: “What’s exciting for us at Esh Construction is seeing the momentum of our secured pipeline translate into real opportunities for our people. We already have talented individuals in project management roles who we see progressing further, and we’re actively recruiting personnel with the potential to grow into leadership positions.
“It’s a reflection of our commitment to ‘growing our own’ - investing in rising talent and creating clear pathways for career development. It is a great time for the right people to join the business.”
The division’s momentum in Yorkshire and Humber reflects Esh Group’s wider success. With turnover up to £265 million, an order book exceeding £2 billion, and recognition as one of Deloitte’s UK Best Managed Companies for 2025, the group is delivering sustainable growth through a clear, resilient strategy.
“There’s a lot of opportunity in the region, and we’re in a strong position to deliver,” added Steven.
“We’ve got the experience, the people and now the pipeline to match. The future is exciting – not just for Esh, but for the communities we work in across Yorkshire.”
