Solar firm 'energised for growth' after takeover

A solar panel installation firm says it has powered up growth plans with a takeover.

Activ8 Solar Energies has bought Burnley’s Low Carbon Energy.

Officials at Ireland-headquartered Activ8 say the deal boosts plans to become “the UK’s biggest commercial and industrial renewable energy provider”, adding it will help double turnover and increase installations over the coming years.

They add Low Carbon Energy will continue operating under its existing brand in the near term.

Ciarán Marron, chief executive of Activ8, which is 50 per cent owned by SSE Airtricity and recently worked on a £3 million solar farm at Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport, said: “This acquisition marks a transformative moment.

“By combining the strengths of Activ8 and Low Carbon Energy, we’re better equipped than ever to deliver large-scale energy solutions.”

Founded in 2009, Low Carbon Energy has worked across more than 300 sites nationwide, with its client book including BMW, Porsche, Co-op, Boeing, United Utilities and the NHS.

Under the terms of the deal, Benedict Ennis will continue as Low Carbon Energy managing director, with founder Ged Ennis remaining a non-executive director.

Benedict said: “This partnership is an exciting step forward.

“Activ8’s track record and market leadership will allow us to build on our foundations, expand our team and deliver more projects at greater scale nationwide.”

Jon Kirby, SSE head of development, added: “We’re committed to helping businesses on their decarbonisation journey.

“This partnership between Activ8 and Low Carbon Energy brings together expertise and years of delivery experience in renewable projects.”
