Local authority rolls out £17 million road repairs
A local authority has unveiled £17 million road improvement plans.
Durham County Council says it will resurface and treat more than 700,000sq metres of highways in its 2025/2026 financial year.
Bosses say the work will cover 100 locations and include surface dressing, inlay and overlay resurfacing, micro asphalt and patching.
They add the authority is also rolling out a highway asset management system, which uses artificial intelligence to gather real-time data on road and footpath conditions.
Councillor Tim McGuinness, cabinet member for rural, communities and highways, said: “We develop a three-year resurfacing programme, which carefully prioritises roads to be treated.
“We use information on road conditions, how often a road is used, accident history and recommendations from highway inspectors to determine the programme.
“Our approach is guided by the principle of the right treatment at the right time.”
