Botterill: “This country is built on the backs of small business owners”

“Millionaire Exodus? Don’t believe the hype,” says business growth guru Botterill

As Brits pack their bags and head off on their summer breaks Nigel Botterill says entrepreneurs aren’t fleeing the country — just the headlines

With Brits heading off for sunnier climes ahead of the great summer getaway, one of the UK’s leading business experts says the reports of an “entrepreneur exodus” are being blown out of proportion.

Nigel Botterill — founder of Entrepreneurs Circle and builder of 15 separate 7-figure businesses — challenged the media narrative of wealthy business owners abandoning Britain, saying it “doesn’t reflect the reality” for 99% of entrepreneurs.

Speaking at the Entrepreneurs Circle Business Masterclass in Solihull — an event co-headlined by Diary of a CEO star Steven Bartlett — Botterill told a live audience of over 500 business owners that the doom-laden tax stories are distracting from what most entrepreneurs are actually focused on: growth.

“This country is built on the backs of small business owners,” said Botterill. “They’re the ones who take the risks, shoulder the stress, and stick it out when others run for the hills. They’re not flying to Dubai or hiding in tax havens — they’re rolling up their sleeves, creating jobs, serving customers, and keeping the economy going — often with little thanks, little support, and zero fanfare.”

While some high-profile individuals may seek lower-tax jurisdictions, Botterill says the vast majority of UK entrepreneurs are still here — and still building.

“Most entrepreneurs aren’t sitting on nine-figure valuations or plotting offshore escapes,” he added. “They’re focused on getting more customers, making payroll, and growing a business that gives them freedom and control over their lives.”

The Solihull event, which featured a keynote from Bartlett and back-to-back training sessions from EC’s team of business coaches, marked a major summer moment for the UK’s entrepreneurial community — topped off by EC’s annual Summer Party at its new £5m headquarters nearby.

Entrepreneurs Circle returns with its flagship National Entrepreneurs Convention this September — the UK’s biggest event for ambitious business owners, packed with world-class speakers, proven marketing strategies, and no-nonsense inspiration.
