Specialist college secures charity status

A South Yorkshire-based college supporting young adults with special educational needs has achieved charitable status.

Rotherham Opportunities College, which helps 16-25-year-olds prepare for life beyond education, will use its new status to expand fundraising efforts and provide enhanced vocational support for students.

Officials say becoming a registered charity marks a significant milestone, enabling the college to continue developing innovative learning opportunities and expanding its positive impact on both students and the wider community.

Dr Perdita Mouseley, principal at Rotherham Opportunities College, said: “Becoming a registered charity is something we have been working towards for some time.

“It is an important milestone for the college because it will help us to explore new opportunities when it comes to accessing new streams of funding.”

The college, rated good by Ofsted, expects to welcome 75 students this September and has attracted learners from South Yorkshire, Kirklees and North East Lincolnshire.

Its pioneering approach equips students with essential adult-life skills, helping many live independently and secure full-time employment.

Close partnerships with local businesses provide supported internships, while students and staff run the ROC Café, at Ulley Country Park, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, as well as participate in community projects throughout the year.

Dr Mouseley added: “We believe that everyone who spends time at our college can play an important role in our local community.

“Our learning experiences are designed to equip our students with the vital skills needed to enjoy many of the things that we all take for granted in adulthood.

“Over the years, we’ve forged some terrific partnerships with local businesses and community-led organisations, and we are hoping to extend our offering to ensure that no young adult with special educational needs is left behind.

“We’ve got some exciting plans for the college and becoming a charity is central to us realising those ambitions.”
