Rosemary Gautrey presents Howarths Foundation football team with 2025 The Stephen Gautrey Cup

Charity football match hits fundraising goal

A West Yorkshire charity is scoring success on and off the pitch after raising thousands of pounds through a community football match.

Howarths Foundation, based in Cleckheaton, hosted The Stephen Gautrey Cup in memory of a close friend who died in 2023.

The event, sponsored by Howard Civil Engineering and OCU Group, brought together its own business-backed football team and The Phoenix – Supporters Charities Football Club in a spirited contest.

This year’s clash ended in a 7-1 win for Howarths Foundation, with The Phoenix team featuring local darts star Joe Cullen and actor James Hooton.

More importantly, the match raised more than £3500 to support people experiencing hidden homelessness and addiction.

Andy Howarth, chief executive at Howarths Foundation, said: “The Stephen Gautrey Challenge Cup started as a small gathering and is now a much-loved annual event, thanks to the help of Stephen’s family.

“We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who joined us on the day – whether volunteer, player or spectator.

“Your support means a great deal, and we know that the much-needed funds raised will help our charity to continue to make a life-changing difference locally.”

Dan Gautrey added: “We love seeing everyone come together to remember Stephen.

“Knowing that this also helps to raise valuable funds for Howarths Foundation makes it extra special.

“Big shout out to all the players, sponsors, volunteers and WRFCA, you have helped to raise a superb amount for a great cause.”
