Business hub opens in former Dales school

A former school has been transformed into a business and community hub.

Rookhope Business Centre has opened its doors in the old Rookhope Primary School.

The base includes office and workspace units, community rooms and a kitchen.

Bosses say the Durham Dales site, which is managed by Business Durham, has potential to create up to 20 jobs at full capacity.

Councillor Tim McGuinness, the council’s cabinet member for rural communities, said: “We’re delighted tenants are starting to move into Rookhope Business Centre.

“These facilities offer the perfect workspace solution to small businesses, and developing these opportunities will help supercharge the economy across the wider county.

“We look forward to seeing the centre – and its tenants – go from strength to strength.”

Vicky Smith has taken over the running of the Rookhope Kitchen in the building.

She added: “We’ve lived in Rookhope for 18 years, and our children went to the school, so it’s really special to see the building being used again.

“It’s great to see life returning to the village, and with Rookhope Kitchen, we’re excited to help bring more energy to the community we love.”
