Council breaks ground on town leisure scheme
Work has officially started on a town leisure centre and library development.
Durham County Council has broken ground on a Bishop Auckland scheme.
The project will replace Woodhouse Close Leisure Centre and Woodhouse Close Library.
The base will feature a library, two swimming pools, a gym, exercise studios, sauna and steam room, soft play centre and café.
Work is expected to be completed in 2027.
The project is being funded by the council, with £2.75 million backing from Sport England.
Councillor Joe Quinn, Durham County Council’s cabinet member for resources, investment and assets, said: “We’re delighted to be moving forward with the new leisure centre and library.
“The new centre supports our ambition to build better communities and thriving towns.”
