Firms unveil 'UK-first' 2500-job nuclear scheme

Plans have been unveiled to create a 2500-job nuclear power venture.

Centrica and X-Energy hope to build a fleet of modular reactors in Hartlepool.

Bosses say the “UK-first” 12-unit scheme would provide power for 1.5 million homes and deliver a “golden age of nuclear power”.

They add first electricity generation is planned for the mid-2030s, with the development adding at least £12 billion to the local economy and helping generate high-temperature heat to support Teesside’s heavy industries.

It would neighbour Hartlepool’s existing EDF-led nuclear power station, which is scheduled for decommissioning in 2028.

Jonathan Brash, Hartlepool MP, said the endeavour would put the North East town “at the forefront of Britain’s nuclear future”.

He said: “This deal marks a historic moment for Hartlepool.

“This UK/US partnership with our town at its centre, brings billions in investment, creates high-quality jobs and secures clean energy for generations to come.

“With the UK’s first advanced modular reactor, Hartlepool will be the beating heart of a clean energy revolution and drive the UK’s economy.”

Chris O’Shea, Centrica chief executive, added: “Our partnership with X-energy marks a bold step forward in delivering advanced nuclear technology that is vital to clean industry and powering homes.

“The fleet will help build a resilient energy system that supports national security, affordability and sustainability.”

J. Clay Sell, X-energy chief executive, said the companies chose Hartlepool for its industrial heritage and skilled workforce.

He said: “We aim to build a fleet that has the ability to reliably deliver clean power, strengthen energy security and grow the transatlantic economy for decades.

“We believe Hartlepool is the right place to begin this journey, with an established industry and a base of professionals and services who can help drive the next generation of nuclear forward.”

Ed Miliband, secretary of state for energy security and net zero, added: “This cross-Atlantic partnership demonstrates the transformative potential of US and UK businesses joining forces.”
