Coffee and confidence flow in South Shields
A new leisure spot is adding to the regeneration of South Shields.
Ferry View, a café-bar built from shipping containers at the ferry terminal, has opened as part of wider investment in the Mill Dam area.
The venue was created in direct response to South Tyneside Council’s consultation, which highlighted strong demand for improved food and drink options along with better public spaces and cycling facilities.
The café-bar offers locally roasted coffee, Dutch-inspired street food and a menu ranging from loaded fries to craft beers.
Designed with cyclists in mind, Ferry View has also partnered with The Electric Bike Shed to provide pedal-assist bike hire, encouraging people to explore the North East coastline.
Hospitality entrepreneur Kenny Coates, who co-owns the business with his father Kenneth Collins, said: “We’ve been delighted by the response so far.
“After visiting Amsterdam, I wanted to bring a taste of that café culture here, where people can meet, enjoy great food and drink, and spend more time by the water.
“It’s brilliant to see so many people embracing it already.”
Since opening in July, the riverside venue has already become a popular destination for families, walkers and day-trippers enjoying views across the Tyne.
Plans are also in place to introduce an après-ski style winter set-up, with outdoor heaters and a covered seating area extending its appeal year-round.
Ferry View is the latest development within South Shields’ town centre blueprint, which aims to boost footfall, support local enterprise and strengthen the town’s reputation as a visitor destination.
Councillor Margaret Meling, lead member for economic growth and transport at South Tyneside Council, added: “Our masterplan for South Shields was shaped by what people told us in the Our South Shields Conservation consultation.
“You asked for more food and drink venues, a livelier riverside and more ways to enjoy active travel, and Ferry View is a fantastic example of how we are responding.
“It brings new life to the Mill Dam area, creates a welcoming social space on the waterfront and shows confidence in the exciting regeneration and investment taking place across South Shields.”
