Engineering a new route to skills success

University isn’t the only route to engineering. Higher technical qualifications, built with employers to plug real skills gaps, are opening doors for the next generation. And Gateshead College and Siemens have joined forces to deliver level four HNC programmes in electrical and general engineering. Here, Siemens’ Andrew McAlindon tells Bdaily’s Colin Young how the partnership is powering today’s learners while shaping tomorrow’s workforce.

What does Siemens’ partnership with Gateshead College entail?

We have a shared ambition to bridge the skills gap in the engineering sector and create pathways into meaningful careers.

We wanted a partner which could deliver high-quality training that combines theoretical knowledge with practical skills.

Gateshead College stood out because of its strong links with industry and its track record in delivering technical education.

By investing in education and training in the North East, we’re helping create skilled employment opportunities and supporting the region’s development as a hub for engineering.

What are higher technical qualifications, and why are they important to Siemens and students looking for an alternative to university?

Higher technical qualifications (HTQs) are level four to five qualifications, such as HNCs and foundation degrees, which provide specialised technical training.

For a business, they help build a workforce of capable and motivated individuals.

For students, HTQs offer a valuable alternative to traditional university routes, allowing them to gain recognised qualifications while gaining real-world experience.

I went through a course a few years ago to obtain a HNC in electrical engineering, and we’re currently supporting students through level four HNC programmes in electrical engineering and general engineering.

The curriculum covers areas such as electrical principles, engineering design, project management and industrial systems.

How do HTQs help meet evolving industry demands?

Industry is changing rapidly, with digitalisation, electrification and sustainability reshaping the engineering landscape.

HTQs are designed to ensure they remain current with technological advancements and industry needs, and offer a combination of benefits: industry-recognised qualifications, practical experience and clear career progression paths.

They’re particularly suitable for those who prefer a more hands-on approach to learning and want to fast-track their career in engineering while avoiding significant student debt.

The practical, hands-on nature of the training ensures students develop the problem-solving and technical skills that are increasingly important in our rapidly-evolving industry.

What benefits have you seen from your partnership with Gateshead College?

There have been numerous benefits.

We are investing in a future-ready workforce and our apprentices are contributing meaningfully to the business while they study.

The combination of college-based learning and workplace application has resulted in highly competent professionals who can contribute effectively to our operations from day one.

How do higher technical qualifications help bridge the gap between vocational training and traditional academic routes?

They provide a perfect middle ground where students can develop theoretical understanding and hands-on skills.

For many students, particularly those who are more practically minded or eager to enter the workforce sooner, HTQs offer a smart, focused alternative to a full university degree.

They also open doors to further study later, such as topping up to a full degree or moving into specialist roles.

If students are interested, what are the qualifications required and what are the next steps?

We love to see people passionate about engineering, and aim to make the application process as straightforward as possible.

We typically look for candidates with a strong foundation in STEM subjects, but we also value enthusiasm, curiosity and a willingness to learn.

Students can apply through Gateshead College’s website or check our early careers website for current opportunities.

  • Places are still available on higher technical qualifications at Gateshead College in engineering, as well as the construction, digital and health sectors. For more information on HTQ qualifications, visit www.gateshead.ac.uk/courses/htq
