Engineer helps fuel sustainable innovation

A North East engineering company is supporting pioneering industrial chemistry.

Northern Engineering Solutions, based in North Shields, has designed, built and installed a bespoke 1000L fermenter for C3 Biotech, a Manchester Institute of Biotechnology (MIB) spinout. 

The fermenter forms part of C3’s innovation to produce bio-derived chemicals and fuels at industrial scale using generative biology and non-sterile fermentation.

C3 Biotech, launched in 2015, develops bio-based alternatives to high-volume petrochemicals used in products including plastics, textiles, fuels and adhesives. 

By leveraging biotechnology and fermentation processes, the company aims to reduce reliance on non-renewable resources.

Northern Engineering Solutions specialises in 3D process engineering design, cleanrooms, process pipework and effluent treatment, supporting clients such as the Royal Air Force, GSK, Pragmatic and Nestlé. 

The company recently celebrated its 18th anniversary, marking nearly two decades of expertise in delivering process engineering solutions for complex industrial applications.
