Residents invited to shape town’s future

A County Durham town is asking residents to help shape its future.

Durham County Council has launched a consultation to develop a Strategic Place Plan (SPP) for Stanley, part of a wider programme covering all towns in the county.

Officials say the plans aim to set a positive vision for each town, guided by the council’s Economic Strategy and shaped with input from local people and businesses.

As part of the consultation, the council is hosting a series of street engagement sessions in Stanley throughout October and early November.

Councillor Karen Allison, Durham County Council’s cabinet member for leisure, tourism, regeneration and high street, said: “We want to hear from the people who live and work in Stanley to help us shape the future of the town.

“We want to understand residents’ and businesses’ thoughts on Stanley, including what can be improved and what they would like to see in the future.

“There are no existing ideas in mind – this vision will be directly shaped by the people of Stanley from the beginning.

“Over the next few weeks, we will be talking to people in the streets, organising drop-in sessions, speaking to children and young people in schools, and visiting community groups and local organisations.

“We will be looking to gather thoughts on the town’s strengths, opportunities and challenges, as well as hopes for its future.”

Residents can share their views on the town’s development, including ideas for public spaces, local facilities, and community priorities.

In addition, the council is seeking opinions on proposed designs for the refurbishment of Stanley Bus Station.

A bid has been submitted for funding from the North East Combined Authority, which, if successful, would support the station’s redevelopment.

Residents can attend the engagement sessions at the following locations and dates:

  • Thursday, October 2 – Asda, Stanley Front Street, from 11am to 4pm
  • Friday, October 10 – Stanley Front Street, from 2pm to 6pm
  • Monday, October 27 – Louisa Centre foyer, from 11am to 4pm
  • Wednesday, October 29 – Stanley Bus Station, from 11am to 4pm
  • Monday, November 3 – Mary Street, outside Stanley Bus Station, from 11am to 3pm

Feedback for the SPP consultation will be accepted until 5pm on November 14. More information and ways to take part can be found here.
