Northumbrian Water: the only water company in the running for Utility of the Year

Northumbrian Water is heading to the capital to compete with the UK’s leading utility companies at one of the industry’s most prestigious awards ceremonies, the Utility Week Awards 2025.

The water company will be proudly representing the North East in London on December 2, with seven shortlisted entries across six award categories.

It also stands as the only water company to make the final nominees for the highly sought-after Utility of the Year award.

Held annually, the Utility Week Awards shine a spotlight on the organisations driving innovation, excellence, and transformation across the utilities sector.

Northumbrian Water’s shortlisted projects showcase the company’s commitment to smarter, greener, and more customer-focused services.

They include the £20 million Smart Sewers project, a UK-first initiative designed to reduce storm overflow spills using a combination of smart sensors and AI technology.

The project, which is transforming how wastewater is managed, has earned nominations in both the Digital Transformation and Innovation categories.

Also recognised is River Deep Mountain AI, a cutting-edge project focused on improving waterbody health across the UK. By harnessing machine learning and digital modelling, the initiative is set to revolutionise how river pollution is monitored and tackled to help protect vital ecosystems.

The full shortlist includes Northumbrian Water in the following categories:

Customer Experience Award – Smart from the Start: Unlocking Your Customer Superpowers
Digital Transformation Award – Smart Sewers
Environmental, Societal and Governance (ESG) Initiative Award – Making Harts’ Smart
Infrastructure Delivery Award – WINEP Durham Transfer Scheme (joint entry with Esh Construction)
Layer to Langford Pipeline (a project by sister company Essex & Suffolk Water)
Innovation Award – Smart Sewers
Unlocking Data Award – River Deep Mountain AI

Heidi Mottram, Chief Executive at Northumbrian Water, said: "To be shortlisted in so many categories and to be the only water company recognised for Utility of the Year is a huge honour for us.

“It’s a reflection of the passion, creativity and dedication of our teams across the business, and we’re excited to showcase the North East on a national stage."

The winners will be revealed at the awards ceremony later this year.
