Digital health hubs expand across Sunderland

An initiative is set to boost digital inclusion across Sunderland.

Seven new Digital Health Hubs have opened across the city, providing residents with devices, connectivity and tailored support to access online services, health resources and employment opportunities.

The £468,465 programme builds on the success of a 2024 pilot, which helped thousands of residents go online for the first time.

Delivered by Sunderland City Council with support from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and in collaboration with Boldyn Networks, the hubs benefited from site visits and the deployment of digital infrastructure.

Councillor Alison Smith, cabinet member for corporate services and equalities at Sunderland City Council, said: “For many people, going online for the first time can feel overwhelming, but the hubs give them a safe and welcoming place to learn at their own pace.

“I’ve seen residents go from not knowing how to switch on a device to booking GP appointments online and staying in touch with family.

“It’s about giving people confidence and showing them how digital skills can make everyday life easier.”

Communities with high digital needs now benefit from seven new hubs, while five existing centres have been upgraded with new equipment, outreach programmes and peer mentoring.

Specialised hubs also cater to vulnerable groups, including those experiencing homelessness, ex-offenders, and young people.

The new hubs are located at the following places:

  • Broadway Youth and Community Centre
  • Hendon Health Hub
  • Penshaw Community Centre
  • Plains Farm Youth and Community Centre
  • The Old Rectory in Houghton-le-Spring
  • Basis Sunderland
  • Swan Lodge

Each site provides reliable Wi-Fi for up to 30 devices, access to digital inclusion tools such as Learn My Way, as well as support from trained volunteer ‘Tech Mates’.

The programme also funds grassroots digital health and wellbeing activities via Links4Life activity grants, helping residents manage long-term health conditions, access financial guidance and engage in healthier lifestyles.

By combining technology, community support and wellbeing initiatives, Sunderland’s Digital Health Hubs are creating safer, more connected communities while ensuring no one is left behind on the city’s smart city journey.

Liz St Louis, director of smart cities and enabling services at Sunderland City Council, added: “Our smart city journey is about more than technology – it’s about people.

“These new Digital Health Hubs ensure that everyone, regardless of their background or circumstances, has the tools, skills and support they need to live healthier, more connected lives.

“It’s a real example of how technology, when delivered locally, can change lives.

“Digital Health Hubs have made a profound difference in our community – from helping older residents attend GP appointments online to supporting young people with job applications and training – the hubs are about building confidence as well as providing online access.”
