Research hub 'steeled for success' with furnace work
A research and innovation base says it is steeled for success after unveiling a £2.9 million equipment upgrade.
The Materials Processing Institute is revamping a seven-tonne electric arc furnace.
Bosses say the work – set to start early next year – will boost the site’s development of “next generation green steel technologies”.
They add it will expand the Middlesbrough-based operator’s capacity to provide melting and casting services for the nuclear, defence, offshore, aerospace and advanced engineering sectors.
Chris Oswin, chief executive, said: “This upgrade marks a major milestone for the UK’s journey towards commercial-scale, low-emission steelmaking.
“It significantly enhances our capacity to develop and demonstrate the technologies needed for future electric arc furnace-based production, providing industry with a unique environment to bring higher recycled content, high-performance steel grades and technologies to market quicker.
“We are moving into a crucial phase of work that will deliver long-lasting benefits for industrial decarbonisation, competitiveness and the resilience of the UK steel supply chain.”
