Metro Bank opens new store in Gateshead

A national lender has opened its first branch in the North East.

Metro Bank has opened a store in Gateshead, marking its first location in the North East and forming part of a wider strategy to grow its physical footprint in communities across the UK.

Based at Retail World Team Valley, the Gateshead branch becomes the bank’s 78th site and will open six days a week, with extended weekday hours and an external ATM for round-the-clock cash access.

Alongside digital and telephone banking options, the store offers Metro Bank’s relationship-led model, with a dedicated local business manager, full counter services and the ability for customers to make cash deposits.

In addition, the branch includes a Safe Deposit Box service and hosts a Safe Space for domestic abuse victims seeking discreet support.

Kristi Capaldi-Brown, local director, North East at Metro Bank, said: “We are delighted to be opening our latest Metro Bank store in Gateshead.

“As someone born and raised in the North East, it makes me incredibly proud that Metro Bank now has a physical presence here.

“Our relationship-led approach to banking is at the heart of what we do and I’m looking forward to working with local businesses of all sizes.”

Councillor Leigh Kirton, Gateshead Council's cabinet member for economy and communications, added: “This is brilliant news for Gateshead as many of our residents rely on face-to-face banking.

“With so many high street banks closing, it’s fantastic that Metro Bank is opening its doors in the Team Valley.

“And it’s great that they have opened their first branch in the North East right here in Gateshead.

“Metro Bank has a superb reputation for working with local communities and I am looking forward to the council and our residents building an excellent relationship with them.”

Sharon Hodgson, MP for Washington and Gateshead South, added: “I’m delighted to welcome Metro Bank to Gateshead as they open their very first store in the North East.

“At a time when many high street banks are closing their doors, this investment is a strong vote of confidence in our community.

“I’m hopeful that their presence brings the promise of new jobs, fresh energy for our local economy, and the kind of banking support that will help local businesses and households thrive.

“We wish them every success as they become part of our vibrant region.”

Gateshead is the bank’s third new opening this year, following recent launches in Chester and Salford, reinforcing its commitment to a blended high-street and digital banking approach.

Kerry Reynolds, director of retail and business banking at Metro Bank, added: “Our store in Gateshead is our first location in the North East as we grow our regional presence and bring in-person relationship banking to more communities.

“We’re looking forward to playing our role in facilitating further growth by providing access to banking services and finance to the customers and businesses that are the lifeblood of the local economy.”
