Gateshead communities set for £1.5 million lift
A North East local authority is preparing to deliver a wide range of neighbourhood improvements following a significant new investment.
Gateshead Council will receive £1.5 million from the Pride in Place Impact Fund to support upgrades to public spaces, community facilities and high streets across the borough over the next two years.
Officials say the funding is designed to make visible, immediate changes that strengthen local pride, improve quality of life and support economic growth.
Projects already identified include improvements to Saltwell Park as it marks its 150th anniversary, with enhancements to play areas and public spaces.
A new Capital Community Chest will also provide grants for resident-led neighbourhood projects, while temporary public realm upgrades will be delivered in areas such as Gateshead Quays and the town centre ahead of major regeneration work.
The programme will focus on three core priorities: revitalising valued buildings and creating welcoming community hubs; enhancing parks, play areas and leisure facilities to improve wellbeing; and upgrading streets, shopfronts and public areas to support local businesses and increase footfall.
Aligned with Gateshead Council’s wider regeneration, environment and economic strategies, the investment is expected to create jobs, stimulate innovation and strengthen partnerships across the borough, helping communities thrive long term.
Councillor Leigh Kirton, cabinet member for economy and communications at Gateshead Council, said: “This investment is great news for Gateshead people.
“By improving our high streets, public spaces, and community facilities, we’re not just investing in bricks and mortar – we’re investing in pride, opportunity and the future of Gateshead.”
