Port has wind in sails after six-figure expansion boost
A port operator has secured six-figure funding to boost expansion plans.
Port of Blyth has received £275,000 from The Crown Estate.
Bosses say the cash will push forward a redevelopment blueprint for the site’s Battleship Wharf terminal, supporting infill design work, three hectares of land reclamation and dredging.
They add the work will “enhance port capacity, operational efficiency and further support the expansion of the UK’s offshore renewables sector”.
Martin Lawlor, Port of Blyth chief executive, said: “This funding marks an exciting milestone for Blyth and the offshore wind sector, during a year when we celebrate 25 years in offshore wind.
“By reclaiming land and deepening the river channel, we are unlocking new opportunities for offshore renewable energy, enabling unrestricted access for larger offshore vessels and creating a dedicated facility for cable storage, marshalling, manufacturing and long-term operations and maintenance support.”
North East mayor Kim McGuinness added: “This is great news for the offshore sector in the region.
“I’m delighted the port has been successful.
“We’re working to make the North East the home of the green energy revolution – and projects like this are a huge part of that.”
