Gateshead welcomes inclusive community hub
A North East community facility is set to open its doors to support inclusivity, wellbeing and connection through a new purpose-built space designed for people of all ages and backgrounds.
The ONE Centre is opening in Gateshead as the region’s dedicated LGBTQ+ community hub, operated by Gateshead-based charity OUT North East.
Located within a renovated building at the Stonehills complex, the centre aims to provide a safe, welcoming and accessible environment for LGBTQ+ people, allies, families and local organisations.
Peter Darrant, chair of OUT North East, said: “OUT North East’s aim has always been to create a dedicated community hub for LGBTQ+ people across our region, and we are proud that – thanks to the invaluable support of Gateshead Council and our partners – this vision is now becoming a reality.
“The ONE Centre will be a welcoming space where our community and our allies can come together, support one another, and build meaningful connections.
“It will host events, activities, and programmes designed to inspire confidence, promote wellbeing and create positive outcomes for people of all ages.
“The ONE Centre marks an exciting new chapter for LGBTQ+ inclusion, visibility and empowerment in the North East.”
Due to open to the public in February, the facility will include counselling rooms, classrooms, meeting spaces, creative studios and a community kitchen, creating a flexible and collaborative setting.
The centre has been shaped through extensive consultation with the LGBTQ+ community, with Gateshead selected for its accessibility and strong transport links.
Funding for the project has been provided through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, which supports initiatives that build pride in place, improve life chances and strengthen local communities across the region.
Councillor Martin Gannon, leader of Gateshead Council, added: “This is fantastic news for Gateshead – everyone has a right to feel safe.
“The ONE Centre will give a safe space for people to access advice/support, develop skills, share experiences and reduce isolation felt by some.
“We want our residents to love where they live and to do this people need to be proud of their local community, their local environment and themselves.
“The people of Gateshead make us the unique, creative, ambitious and culturally diverse borough that we are all fortunate to be part of.
“Having the opportunity to celebrate our differences is therefore crucially important to the future success of the borough.”
