Ultra-rapid EV charging lands near airport

A North East EV charging network has expanded with the opening of a new ultra-rapid hub.

Fastned has opened a new ultra-rapid, drive-thru EV charging hub close to Newcastle Airport, strengthening charging provision across the region.

The site features 12 charging bays delivering up to 400 kW per vehicle, allowing drivers to add around 100 miles of range in just five minutes.

Located near the airport terminal and Callerton Parkway Metro station, the hub is positioned to serve airport users, local residents, taxi drivers and business fleets.

Designed with accessibility in mind, the new hub includes extra-wide bays and suspended charging cables to improve safety and ease of use for all drivers.

Tom Hurst, UK and Ireland country director at Fastned, said: “Our first airport location at Newcastle Airport is an exciting milestone.

“As people make the classic ‘Driving Home for Christmas’ journey this festive season, our new ultra-rapid charging hub forms part of our growing network across the North East, supporting hundreds of thousands of charging sessions and helping people travel sustainably across the region.

“So, whether you’re heading to the airport, visiting family and friends, exploring seasonal events such as local markets, or simply going about your day, there are now faster, greener charging options available.”

Dean Ward, director of commercial at Newcastle Airport, added: “The new hub is our latest investment to make charging electric vehicles faster and more reliable for everyone.

“Just a short drive from the terminal, it’s perfectly placed for passengers travelling to and from the Airport, for those dropping off or picking up friends and family and for members of the local community.

“The opening of the hub marks another major milestone on our journey to become a Net Zero Carbon Airport by 2035 and reflects the fantastic progress being made across our business to create a cleaner, more sustainable future.”

The opening brings Fastned’s total number of sites in the North East to 12, further extending its regional network.

Since launching the UK’s first ultra-rapid charging hub in Sunderland in 2019, Fastned’s North East sites have supported more than 273,000 charging sessions.

The firm has also been recognised by UK EV drivers for ease of use and payment options.

Councillor Martin Gannon, cabinet member for transport at the North East Combined Authority, added: “We are thrilled to welcome Fastned’s ultra-rapid charging hub to the North East.

“As more drivers look to transition to electric vehicles, it is crucial that we have the infrastructure to support and encourage this.

“This eye-catching and striking charging hub, located conveniently on a Metro line and near the airport, will allow more people to pull in, charge, and get back on the road.

“We are leading the way in installing new charge points across the region, and welcome this latest addition as the North East becomes the home of the green energy revolution.”
