RWE renews backing for energy campus
A North East clean energy skills initiative has secured renewed backing from a renewables firm as demand grows for a future-ready workforce.
Energy Central Campus (ECC) has confirmed that RWE has renewed its Platinum Business Sponsorship for a further year, reinforcing a shared commitment to developing the skills needed to support the UK’s expanding clean energy sector.
The relationship was first established through RWE’s Sofia Offshore Wind Farm, which became a platinum sponsor during the early development of the campus.
Bosses say the renewed agreement reflects RWE’s longer-term focus on investing in talent, training and capability to underpin the growth of offshore wind and wider clean energy technologies.
As a platinum sponsor, RWE continues to play an active role in supporting ECC’s training programmes, helping ensure courses are aligned with real-world industry needs and designed to produce high-quality, work-ready talent.
Danielle Lane, RWE’s director of offshore wind development (UK and Ireland), said: “Through projects like Sofia, RWE is helping the United Kingdom reach its offshore wind target of 50GW installed capacity by 2030, and the wider aim to decarbonise the power system by 2035.
“Achieving these targets will only be possible with a much larger trained workforce available to construct, operate and maintain offshore wind farms.
“That’s why Energy Central is so important, and it’s why we are delighted to continue our support for this groundbreaking institution.”
ECC is a collaborative skills partnership between the Port of Blyth, Northumberland County Council and the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult.
Its aim is to create clear pathways into clean energy careers while supporting local communities through education, training and employment opportunities.
Martin Lawlor OBE, chair of ECC, commented: “We are delighted to continue our partnership with RWE.
“Their ongoing support demonstrates the importance of industry leadership in shaping the skills and training required to meet the needs of the clean energy sector, both now and in the future.
“RWE’s continued engagement as a Platinum Business Sponsor is invaluable in ensuring our provision remains industry-led, relevant and impactful.”
The campus forms part of the £95 million Energising Blyth regeneration programme, which is focused on growing, renewing and connecting the town.
The programme is being delivered by Northumberland County Council with funding from the UK Government, Northumberland County Council and the North East Combined Authority, alongside support from a range of industry partners.
