Awards event returns to celebrate youngsters' feats

A ceremony celebrating youngsters’ grassroots achievements has attracted top backing.

The North East Community Champion Awards have secured support across an eight-strong category list.

Launched by Northern Leaders Trust alongside joint main sponsor Association of Education Advisers, the awards celebrate young people across the Newcastle area demonstrating kindness, courage, leadership and commitment to their communities.

And organisers say nominations for this year’s event have already exceeded previous ceremonies.

Sponsors for the evening include Ryder Architecture, BAM Construction, AtkinsRéalis and London Stock Exchange-listed investment company Develop North.

Gateshead-based building contractor Brims, law firm Muckle LLP, The Education Network and Hart Family Accountancy are also backing the event.

The ceremony will take place on Thursday, February 12, at Newcastle Eagles’ Vertu Motors Arena.

Shaun Porter, director at The Education Network and sponsor of the Community Hero Award, said: “As an organisation that is heavily involved in schools and communities across the region, we see every day how dedication, kindness and leadership can change lives.

Michelle Percy, newly-appointed chief executive at Develop North, which is sponsoring the Special Recognition Award, added: “Events like this typify everything that is truly great about this wonderful region, its history and its roots.”

Award nominations – for young people aged 18 and below that attend a Newcastle school or college – will close on Saturday, January 31.
