Plans unveiled for 100-plus job plastics recycling base
Plans for a 100-plus-job plastics recycling plant are set to move forward.
TCP Circular has unveiled a blueprint to create a Port of Sunderland base.
Bosses say the factory will have capacity to annually process about 100,000 tonnes of soft food packaging and domestic and industrial plastics.
They add the plant – which will create raw materials for the petrochemical industry and be powered by self-generated gas – could be operational in 2028.
TCP Circular’s plans come after initial proposals to create a factory failed to materialise.
Chris Lach, TCP Circular chief executive, said: “We look forward to bringing our plans to life in the months ahead.
“Facilities such as this are greatly needed across the UK as we move towards a more circular economy.
“We believe it’s an excellent site and are excited to be working with Sunderland City Council.”
Councillor Michael Mordey, leader of Sunderland City Council and port board chair, added: “With our track record in electric vehicle and battery manufacturing, TCP’s investment would be another key milestone in our journey as we embed and grow Sunderland’s reputation as a global hub for sustainable investment.”
