Engineer secures further dock work in Liverpool

A North East ground engineering specialist has secured further work in Liverpool’s waterfront redevelopment.

Stokesley-based RWO has been appointed to carry out further geoenvironmental investigations at Liverpool Docks as part of a wider regeneration masterplan.

The latest commission will see its geoenvironmental services team assess ground conditions for the relocation of one of the original propellers of RMS Lusitania, forming part of National Museums Liverpool’s plans to create a permanent memorial to the liner, which was sunk off the south coast of Ireland after being torpedoed by a German U-boat on 7 May 1915 during the First World War.

RWO is also undertaking deep borehole drilling and pressure meter testing ahead of the construction of a new pedestrian bridge linking Royal Albert Dock with Mann Island and Canning Dock.

Additional trenching works and land contamination assessments are being delivered as part of a comprehensive support package.

The wider redevelopment includes improvements to buildings across the heritage waterfront, including the Dr Martin Luther King Jr Building at the Royal Albert Dock.

Chris Rudd, director of geoenvironmental at RWO, said: “This additional work for Liverpool docks, reflects our ability to turnaround projects rapidly, strengthening our relationship with the client as a go-to ground engineering specialist, capable of supporting infrastructure and inward investment initiatives.

“Over the next 12 -18 months, we will see opportunities right across the UK as facility operators and owners bring forward their investment and development plans.”

The latest contract follows earlier work completed by RWO at the site and comes amid continued growth for its geoenvironmental department, which expects revenues to reach £1 million by 2026.
