My Delhi serves up community support
A Newcastle restaurant group has launched a new charitable initiative aimed at supporting people experiencing homelessness and hardship through regular hot meal donations.
My Delhi prepared and served 200 freshly cooked meals at local charity The People’s Kitchen as the first step in its new Hot Meals Initiative.
Members of the restaurant team joined volunteers at the Newcastle charity to cook and serve curry for those in need.
The programme will see the group return to The People’s Kitchen each month to help prepare meals, creating an ongoing partnership with the long-standing community organisation.
Funding for the initiative comes through My Delhi’s Bottomless Curry Club, with £1 from every menu sold contributing to the scheme and matched by the restaurant.
Elahi Amin, co-founder of My Delhi, said: “This is our community, and we believe everyone should have access to a warm meal.
“Sometimes we take that for granted, but the reality is many people in our city are facing incredibly difficult circumstances.
“We’re proud to support the amazing work The People’s Kitchen has been doing in Newcastle for more than 40 years, and it was a privilege for our team to spend time cooking alongside their volunteers.”
The People’s Kitchen has supported people experiencing homelessness and poverty in Newcastle since 1985, providing food, clothing and essential assistance.
As part of the wider initiative, a portion of the funds raised will also be used each year to provide meals for people experiencing homelessness in Delhi, the city that inspired the restaurant brand.
Elahi added: “Through this initiative we also wanted to connect Newcastle with Delhi, the city that inspired My Delhi, helping to provide meals for people in need in both places.”
