The Tempus unveils star bathing experience
A luxury Northumberland hotel has introduced a new stargazing experience as demand grows for high-end ‘noctourism’ travel centred on night sky viewing.
The Tempus, a boutique hotel located on the Charlton Hall Estate within Northumberland International Dark Sky Park, has launched a Self-Guided Star Bathing Experience designed to allow guests to explore the region’s night skies at their own pace.
The hotel already offers guided stargazing stays led by astronomers from nearby Kielder Observatory, and the new experience builds on the popularity of those sessions.
Guests can enjoy the skies from locations across the estate including lakeside cabins featuring handcrafted outdoor spa baths and hot tub rooms with private terraces at the Farmhouse, The Lookout and Stable Cottage.
To enhance the experience, visitors receive a bespoke hamper containing star charts produced by Northumberland National Park, red-light torches to protect night vision, blankets and warming drinks.
Elain Meenaghan, director of sales at The Doxford Group, which owns The Tempus along with Charlton Hall and Doxford Barns, said: “With appreciation for dark skies growing at pace both globally and locally, our guided stargazing stays have gone from strength to strength since they were first introduced in 2024.
“So, it feels like the next natural step to introduce a new self-guided experience, offering guests the freedom to enjoy the magic of our skies outside of set event dates, aided by our specially curated Star Bathing hamper.
‘It’s an invitation to stargazers of all levels, beginners included, to slow down, switch off and soak up the night skies in all their beauty, before returning to the warmth and comfort of indoors to relax and reflect on an unforgettable evening.”
The initiative forms part of the hotel’s wider effort to tap into growing interest in immersive night-time tourism experiences in the region’s internationally recognised dark skies.
