Plans submitted for 252-home Gateshead scheme

A housebuilder is progressing plans for a major residential development as part of wider regeneration efforts in Gateshead.

Taylor Wimpey is preparing to submit a planning application for a 252-home scheme at Clasper Village, working in partnership with Gateshead Council to bring the site forward.

The development will transform an elevated riverside site next to the Redheugh Bridge (see below) overlooking the Tyne, with the land being prepared thanks to £3 million of funding secured through North East mayor Kim McGuinness.

Plans, which were developed in collaboration between Taylor Wimpey and P+HS Architects, include a mix of one to four-bedroom homes, with 15 per cent to be acquired by the council for affordable housing, including social rent and shared ownership.

The scheme has been designed to promote sustainable living, with new pedestrian and cycle routes, green spaces and improved public areas forming a key part of the masterplan.

Located within easy reach of Gateshead and Newcastle city centres, the development will also connect with the nearby Staiths South Bank neighbourhood.

Mark Fletcher, land and planning director at Taylor Wimpey North East, said: “Submitting our plans for Clasper Village marks a significant milestone for this site.

“Working in partnership with Gateshead Council and the North East mayor, our proposals will deliver a thoughtfully designed neighbourhood that reflects the character of the riverside while creating new opportunities for people to live close to the centres of Gateshead and Newcastle.

“Subject to planning approval, we look forward to seeing this new community take shape in the years ahead.”

Nathan Sanders, studio principal and lead architect at P+HS Architects in Newcastle, added: “Clasper Village has been designed as a people-first neighbourhood, with walkable streets, strong links to the riverside and shared spaces that encourage community life.”

Mayor McGuinness added: “We're getting on with delivering new homes where families want them most, in the heart of our towns and cities where we can create stronger communities close to jobs and opportunity.

“Our £3 million commitment to Clasper Village will help unlock the full potential of a site that has sat unused for too long, and is part of a much bigger transformation for Gateshead we're leading through new homes at the Old Town Hall, new space for business in the Railway Quarter and £24 million to make Gateshead Quays home to a world-class arena.

“Together these investments will create hundreds of new jobs and a town centre local people can be really proud of, as we accelerate regeneration throughout the Newcastle-Gateshead area, the North's most exciting urban growth programme.”
