Internship scheme opens doors for careers
A public sector organisation is offering paid internships to help young people gain experience and kickstart their careers.
Tees Valley Combined Authority (TVCA) has opened applications for its Summer 2026 Internship Programme, providing opportunities across a range of departments supporting regional growth and regeneration.
The organisation, led by Tees Valley mayor Ben Houchen, oversees more than £1.7 billion of investment spanning transport, infrastructure, business support, skills, and net zero initiatives.
Internships are available to university students at all stages of study, with roles in areas including marketing and communications, procurement, transport and infrastructure, and investment development.
Participants will gain hands-on experience in a full-time office environment, developing practical and transferable skills while contributing to major regional projects.
The programme also offers the Real Living Wage, currently £12.71 per hour, with applications closing on April 28.
Former intern Rory Hannon, who is now a policy development officer at the combined authority, said: “Taking on an internship at the TVCA gave me a very useful initial step up into the world of work.
“After gaining valuable experience working in the region, it’s great to now be back on board with the team.
“I was keen to work again at the combined authority following the initial positive experience with the internship, the ambitious work TVCA has undertaken and continues to undertake, and the exciting policy horizon that has emerged around devolution.
“I’d highly recommend it.”
Current department for transport aviation ambassador Marcus Sellars, who is currently steering the cutting-edge autonomous vehicles trial ongoing at Teesside Airport, also began his career at the combined authority through the internship programme.
He added: “To be working at the very edge of technology in autonomous transport at the combined authority is brilliant – and the internship placement after my Masters provided a great grounding for my role now.”
Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “We’ve worked hard to bring major investment into Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool by creating thousands of well-paid, high-quality jobs for local people.
“This internship programme is about making sure our young people are right at the heart of this success story – and shaping thousands more to come.
“Our internships have already helped launch careers across a wide range of industries, both at home and beyond, and we’ve seen just how much talent comes through the scheme.
“You’ll gain real experience, build confidence and develop skills that employers are looking for.
“But just as importantly, you’ll bring fresh ideas and energy that help us keep pushing our region forward.
“I’d encourage anyone thinking about their future to take that step and apply.”
