Project transforms ex-mining site into nature hub
Work has begun to transform an ex-mining site into a nature haven.
Advance Green Futures is redeveloping Potland Burn into a wildlife hub.
Officials say the 268-hectare venture will create a “complex mosaic of habitats” including grassland, scrub and ponds.
They say the endeavour, based north of Ashington, in Northumberland, will also use technology to track species recovery, habitat health and environmental changes, adding it “marks a major step forward for environmental restoration and sustainable development”.
Advance Green Futures operates as a division of Advance Northumberland, the property investment and development business supporting Northumberland County Council.
William Thompson, Advance Northumberland director of governance and sustainability, said: “Potland Burn has incredible potential to deliver large-scale, meaningful environmental regeneration.
“The start of on-site works is a significant milestone in a carefully planned programme that will restore habitats, enhance biodiversity and create a landscape that builds a better future for all.”
Ann Deary-Francis, Advance Northumberland head of ecology, added: “We hope to attract a wide range of species to Potland Burn, from the smallest invertebrate to large mammals and birds of prey.”
