Airport reduces emissions in net-zero push
A North East transport hub is accelerating its sustainability plans after significantly reducing emissions as part of its journey towards net-zero.
Newcastle International Airport has cut its on-site carbon emissions by 46 per cent compared to 2019, putting it ahead of its target to reach net zero by 2035.
The reduction follows a series of investments aimed at improving energy efficiency and reducing reliance on fossil fuels across the site.
A key change has been the switch to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) to power all non-electric vehicles, helping cut fleet emissions by 59 per cent in a year and saving around 130 tonnes of carbon.
Further improvements include energy efficiency upgrades across the terminal and baggage areas, alongside the use of renewable energy from an on-site solar farm.
The progress reflects wider efforts to align with regional and national sustainability targets, as the airport continues to reduce its environmental impact while supporting future growth.
Alice Andreasen, chief corporate affairs officer at Newcastle Airport, said: “Achieving a 46 per cent reduction in our carbon emissions since 2019 is a major milestone and clearly shows that we are well ahead of schedule on our journey to net-zero by 2035.
“This progress is the result of decisive investment, innovative thinking and a shared commitment from our teams and business partners across the airport.
“From switching our entire non‑electric vehicle fleet to HVO fuel to investing in more energy efficient measures, these changes are delivering a real, measurable impact as well as making economic sense.
“We know there is more to do but we remain fully committed to leading the way in sustainable aviation while supporting the region’s wider net-zero ambitions.”
