RISE Associates opens North East base

A Manchester-based social research consultancy is strengthening its national footprint with a move into the North East as demand grows for insight-led policy and cultural change support.

RISE Associates, founded in 2018 and working across the public, private and third sectors to support behavioural change, policy development and workplace culture, has opened a new North East office as part of its expansion strategy.

The new base will be led by recently appointed director Chris McHugh, who will oversee delivery across areas including economic analysis, social research and strategic advisory. 

Chris says the expansion reflects increasing demand for support in navigating evolving legislation and driving organisational change.

He said: “With devolution well underway, the North East is the perfect place to open a new office.

“We’re launching to partner with organisations that want to make a positive impact – whether that’s building support for culture, investment, engaging communities on regeneration plans, or shaping strategies that make communities healthier, safer and more vibrant.” 

Chaired by Nazir Afzal OBE, former chief prosecutor for the North West, RISE Associates has built a growing reputation for high-profile and impactful work. 

The consultancy was recently appointed by BAFTA to lead an independent review following an incident during its 79th Film Awards broadcast, drawing international attention.

It has also played a key role in the arts and culture sector, delivering its Class Ceiling inquiry into working-class participation in Greater Manchester. 

The report, co-sponsored by Greater Manchester Combined Authority, received national recognition and was warmly received by mayor Andy Burnham, who accepted all 21 of its recommendations.  

With clients including London Fire Brigade, the Nursing and Midwifery Council and the National Education Union, the firm’s North East expansion signals its ambition to further scale its influence and support organisations tackling complex social challenges.
