TVCA seeks new oversight advisers
A North East public body is recruiting independent advisers to strengthen oversight and uphold standards as it continues its governance improvement programme.
Tees Valley Combined Authority (TVCA) is inviting applications for Independent Persons to serve a four-year term, supporting the organisation in maintaining high standards of conduct, transparency and accountability.
The role sits at the heart of the combined authority’s governance framework, with appointees providing impartial input on standards-related matters.
Independent Persons are consulted on decisions to investigate complaints and before conclusions are reached, as well as on issues relating to the Code of Conduct for elected members.
By offering objective and independent perspectives, the positions are designed to reinforce fairness and consistency in decision-making, while helping to build and maintain public trust.
The appointments come as the TVCA continues its wider improvement journey, focusing on strengthening how it operates and delivers for residents, businesses and regional partners.
Tees Valley mayor Ben Houchen said: “We are delivering major investment and opportunity across our region, and it is essential that everything we do is underpinned by strong, transparent and good governance.
“Independent Persons bring valuable external perspective and challenge, helping us maintain the highest standards as we continue to grow and improve.”
Roles are open to individuals with strong judgement, integrity and an interest in public life, with a background in governance, legal or regulatory work seen as beneficial but not essential.
Experience in handling complaints or working in oversight roles may also be relevant.
The positions are part-time and non-executive, with successful applicants called upon as required.
Each role carries an annual retainer of £2000, alongside travel and subsistence expenses.
Jeanette McGarry, interim monitoring officer at TVCA, added: “This is an important and rewarding role.
“Independent Persons make a genuine difference in Authorities by providing balanced, objective advice and helping to uphold high standards across the organisation.
“It’s a great opportunity for someone who wants to contribute to public service in a meaningful way.”
Applications are open until May 26, with the TVCA encouraging candidates who can bring independent, constructive insight to its decision-making processes.
