Digital agency returns to its roots at BIC
A Sunderland-based digital agency is building its next phase of growth from the same business hub that played a key role in its founder’s childhood.
Northern Digital, founded by Dave Head, is expanding its brand identity and automation services from the North East BIC, where Dave’s late mother previously ran her own engineering design business.
Having grown up around the BIC’s corridors and business community, Dave, who describes the BIC as a “home from home” has now returned to the site to develop Northern Digital from a freelance operation into a specialist agency working across healthcare, software and immersive technology.
The company helps organisations simplify complex processes using AI and automation tools designed to improve efficiency and decision making.
Since moving into the BIC’s coworking space, Northern Digital has secured a growing portfolio of retained clients including WE-AR VR and Menopause Medical.
Dave credits the BIC’s business support network and advisors John Forth, Hina Joshi and Debbie Simpson as a key factor in the company’s growth, while the agency is also investing in local talent through internship opportunities with University of Sunderland students.
He said: “I’ve been coming to the BIC since I can remember, so being back here now feels like coming home.
“Before setting up the agency, I reached a point where I felt limited by other people’s systems and processes.
“Running my own business isn’t just a job, it’s who I am.”
Dave added: “The support has been massive - from funded services to advice and introductions.
“There is a huge sense of community here; coworking and networking help combat the isolation of running a business solo.”
Looking ahead, Dave hopes to secure a permanent office at the BIC and continue building long-term partnerships with clients across the region.
Paul McEldon OBE, chief executive at the North East BIC, added: “It’s stories like Dave’s that truly showcase the heart of the community here at the BIC.
“It is a privilege to see the legacy his late mother has left behind come full circle, with Dave returning years later to build his own successful business in the very same place.”
