Hydrogen firm powers on with defence agreement

A zero-emission power firm has bolstered its order book with a defence deal.

GeoPura is working with the Royal Air Force.

Bosses say the “flagship” contract will deliver zero-emission electric vehicle charging infrastructure across six operational sites.

They add each system will operate as a solar-led microgrid, with hydrogen-enabled power “ensuring operational continuity day and night” while reducing the reliance on diesel generators.

All sites are set to be operational by the end of October, with Newcastle-based GeoPura providing support over a three-year period.

The contract builds on Ministry of Defence trials in 2024, where GeoPura deployed electric vehicle charging hubs across RAF, Royal Navy and Army sites.

Andrew Cunningham, GeoPura chief executive, said: “Modern defence operations rely on consistent access to energy wherever it’s needed.

“This contract marks a step forward in strengthening the RAF’s resilience while reducing reliance on fixed infrastructure and fossil fuels.”

RAF group captain Maurice Dixon added: “These self-powered charging units will provide Air Command with flexible surge power capacity for various operational needs, including grid reinforcement and deployment scenarios.”

The deal comes after GeoPura secured Port of Tilbury and Lower Thames Crossing project contracts.
