Manchester welcomes new Lord Mayor
Councillor Shaukat Ali has officially been sworn in as the 128th Lord Mayor of Manchester following the city’s annual Mayor Making ceremony.
Elected as a councillor in 2012, councillor Ali has served on a range of key committees and boards throughout his time in local government, including planning and highways, children’s scrutiny and neighbourhood services.
During his mayoral year, he will focus on supporting children in social care and promoting community cohesion across Manchester.
Originally from District Mirpur in Azad Kashmir, Pakistan, councillor Ali moved to Manchester at the age of 16 speaking very little English.
He worked across textile manufacturing, retail and as a licensed taxi driver while studying English and gaining further qualifications.
Over more than a decade in local government, he has become known for his strong community focus, including volunteering during the Covid-19 pandemic to deliver food to vulnerable residents across North Manchester.
Councillor Ali will be supported throughout his year as Lord Mayor by his wife, Kausar Parveen, who will serve as Lady Mayoress.
He said: “It is a great honour to serve as Lord Mayor and to represent the people of Manchester.
“My early years in Pakistan, alongside my life here in Manchester, where I have made my home and raised my family, have strongly shaped my values.
“In this role, I am proud to champion our city and celebrate the diversity, resilience and community spirit that make Manchester so special.
“I have seen first-hand how collaboration, mutual respect and hard work can bring people together and make a positive difference.
“With the continued support of my family and the people of Manchester, I look forward to supporting communities, promoting the city, and recognising the many organisations and individuals who contribute so much to its success.”
