Raby Castle to hold countryside summit
A national rural affairs forum aimed at shaping the future of Britain’s countryside is heading to County Durham next month.
Future Countryside, which is powered by The Countryside Alliance Foundation, will take place at Raby Castle on June 2, bringing together leading voices from across rural Britain for a day of debate focused on economic growth, environmental recovery and community resilience.
Now in its fourth year, the event has become one of the UK’s leading forums for countryside policy and rural affairs.
Speakers confirmed for this year include broadcaster Kirstie Allsopp, author Sir Simon Jenkins and columnist Matt Ridley, alongside representatives from organisations including The Wildlife Trusts and the National Trust.
The programme will explore topics ranging from food production and housing to rural enterprise, land management and skills development.
Organisers say the event aims to highlight practical ideas and partnerships already helping shape a modern countryside while encouraging open discussion around the challenges facing rural communities.
Lord Herbert of South Downs, chair of Future Countryside, said: “Future Countryside 2026 will be a chance to put rural Britain at the heart of national political debate.
“The decisions taken in the coming years will shape the lives, livelihoods and landscapes of generations to come.
“Holding the event at Raby Castle symbolises both tradition and renewal, and we are proud to be convening voices from every part of the rural sector in such a historic setting.”
Farmers, business leaders, environmentalists and policymakers are expected to attend, with the focus on how the countryside can support economic growth, strengthen communities and contribute to national priorities.
Additional speakers include former NFU president Minette Batters, Daniel Zeichner MP, Craig Bennett of The Wildlife Trusts and Chris Woodley-Stewart of the North Pennines National Landscape.
Lord Barnard, who is hosting the event at Raby Castle with his wife, Lady Barnard, added: “The Future Countryside Event is a forum for creative thought and debate on some of the most difficult issues facing our precious rural environment.
“It brings together some of the most influential rural leaders from diverse backgrounds and professional experience.
“I’m delighted that the event is coming to the north of England and that Raby will be hosting.
“Much has changed here in recent years, and I hope our own experiences will contribute to the conversation.”
