EPS powers battery storage roll-out
A Teesside electrical engineering consultancy has secured work on three multi-million-pound battery energy storage projects designed to support the UK’s cleaner energy transition.
Engineering Power Solutions (EPS) has been appointed by Root-Power to provide engineering consulting, design, technical expertise and safety support for three new battery energy storage system facilities in Scotland and Surrey.
The schemes, worth around £50 million in total, are due to begin construction later this year and will help connect new energy storage sites to the national grid.
Adrian Hall, managing director at EPS, said: “We’re thrilled to be working with Root-Power across these three major BESS projects, delivering the electrical design and engineering guidance needed to support each grid connection scheme.
“Our scope also includes power system studies, cable sizing, earthing design, lightning protection, arc flash assessments and all associated technical documentation.
“We’re looking forward to applying our experience across these projects and supporting the development of safe, compliant electrical designs to meet the expected delivery dates.”
EPS, an independent electrical engineering consultancy with more than 14 years’ experience, specialises in power system modelling and analysis, earthing design, site testing and grid code compliance studies.
The company will support Root-Power’s projects in Glasgow and Dounreay, near Thurso, which will deliver a combined 84MW capacity.
A third project in Caterham, Surrey, will provide 12MW capacity and is expected to supply power to around 24,000 homes once operational.
The sites have been selected based on local demand and proximity to grid connections, with the projects designed to improve grid stability, reduce price volatility and support a more flexible energy network for homes and businesses.
Neil Brooks, managing director at Root-Power, added: “We awarded these three major contracts to Engineering Power Solutions because of its proven experience, expertise and practical approach to delivering grid connections across BESS facilities of this size.
“Having the right partner in place to oversee the design, technical and site-specific requirements across each BESS scheme is essential to allowing them to become fully operational on the grid.
“Projects such as this represent an important step forward for us as a business as we scale our BESS portfolio and contribute ongoing to strengthening the UK’s energy infrastructure.
“Battery storage systems delivered in partnership with electrical engineering specialists such as Engineering Power Solutions, play a critical role in enabling the successful transition to a more flexible, low-carbon grid whilst safeguarding energy supply to thousands of businesses and homes.”
