Golf support drives fundraising for The Sir Bobby Robson Institute
Since its launch in 2008, support for The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation from the North East’s golfing community has not faltered.
Sir Bobby, himself a keen golfer, was touched by the response to his appeal for fundraising help from across the region, and he enjoyed attending golf days and meeting golf club captains who had chosen the Foundation as their chosen charity.
Fittingly, one of the last cheques Sir Bobby received in person for his Foundation was from a group of Northumbria University students who had organised a charity tournament as part of their Sport Management course.
Now, golfing fundraisers including Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Club in Northumberland, who recently raised an incredible £8,493, are driving hard to support construction of the £30m Sir Bobby Robson Institute.
A world-leading cancer trials hub for the region at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care, Freeman Hospital, Newcastle, the institute will provide care and research to find new and faster ways to detect and treat cancer and will be funded by the Foundation.
Stu Imeson, Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Club’s captain, says: "At the start of my captaincy, I chose The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation as my nominated charity and it’s a cause that’s incredibly close to my heart.
“Around 18 months ago, we lost Joyce Down, my partner’s mother. During one of the most difficult periods our family has ever faced, the love, care and support we received through the Foundation was like nothing we had ever experienced before.
“Choosing the Foundation was my way of saying thank you and helping ensure that other families can receive the same level of support when they need it most."
This summer, golfing support for The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation includes the annual golf day at Ramside Hall in memory of Sunderland fan, Kevin Outhwaite, and a fundraising auction and golf day at Morpeth Golf Club organised by Glenn Blaney and supported by clubs across the region and beyond.
With £26.5 million raised so far, support for The Sir Bobby Robson Institute is now crucial to raise the final funds to complete and fully equip the institute by 2027.
Construction of the institute began this year and, for fundraising enquiries, please contact Kate Bradley - kate.bradley14@nhs.net or call 0191 213 7235.
