Grant brings more to community table
A County Durham community group is expanding its programme of local events after securing renewed backing from a regional housebuilder.
West Rainton & Leamside Village Partnership has received a £2000 grant from Banks Homes, enabling it to introduce additional entertainment at its monthly Doors Open, Kettle On afternoon teas.
Held at Jubilee Hall in West Rainton, the events were originally established as dementia-friendly gatherings for older residents but are now open to the wider community.
New activities will include flower arranging sessions and live performances from guest singers.
The funding will also support The Big Lunch, the village’s flagship annual event, which is expected to attract around 400 people to St Mary’s Church grounds for a day of music, science demonstrations and family activities.
Free transport is available for residents who need help attending the events, while local care home residents are also encouraged to take part.
Chris Burns, treasurer at West Rainton & Leamside Village Partnership, said: “Everyone is treated equally at our Doors Open, Kettle On events, regardless of any issues with dementia or other illnesses, and we’ve learned a lot over the months about how to get the most out of our events to have some fun.
“The pick-up service means any transport barriers that residents face in coming along can be removed, while if people can’t make it for ill health or other reasons, we’ll visit them afterwards to make sure they don’t miss out on the food and treats we make available.
“We get lots of great feedback from lunch club guests and their families and carers, and we know just how much of a positive impact it has on their well-being, both on the day and through the days that follow as well.
“Being able to add extra dimensions to these events is only going to enhance this and we’re excited to be now putting our plans for this additional entertainment into action.
“Banks’ continuing support for our work gives us the chance to plan ahead, to think bigger than might otherwise be possible and to focus more on developing and hosting the best days that we can.”
The support marks the third consecutive year that Banks Homes has backed the partnership.
The County Durham-headquartered housebuilder is currently delivering 150 homes at its Cathedral Meadows development in the village and has previously supported a range of community initiatives, including plans for a dedicated steel band practice room at West Rainton Primary School.
Kate Culverhouse, community relations manager at the Banks Group, added: “The Village Partnership team couldn’t be more committed to improving the opportunities and experiences available to everyone in West Rainton and we’re very pleased to be extending our support for their excellent work.”
